Varied leisure & cultural activities

Natural Paradise: Bavarian Forest

The Bavarian Forest is known as the most beautiful low mountain landscape in Europe, remarkable nature park in Germany and impressive magic forest in Bavaria. Endless hiking trails in untouched nature and a wide range of leisure and cultural activities in every season have made the Bavarian Forest one of the most famous family vacation regions in Germany. We present the highlights of this dreamlike landscape to give you a small insight into the diversity of the Bavarian Forest.

The 12 Thousanders in the Bavarian Forest

Enjoy nature and be sporty on one of the longest and most diverse hiking trails in Germany. A distance of 660 kilometers leads you from Marktredwitz to Passau. Either you go on a great discovery tour, or you conquer the Goldsteig bit by bit on a leisurely bike tour, a star tour or classically on foot on a stage hike. Those who are really sporty can even manage eight thousand meters in one day. One of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria is the Osser, one of the thousand-meter peaks in the Bavarian Forest. It is a highlight on the Osser circuit on the Goldsteig trail and can be reached by beginners at Hohenbogen, Hohenwarth or Lam in a good 70 kilometers. Numerous huts and excellent signposting make this hiking experience a must for all nature lovers!

Active vacation

With its dreamlike location in the middle of the extensive forest areas, the ULRICHSHOF is the ideal starting point for excursions and family hikes in the Bavarian Forest.

One of the most beautiful hiking tours in the Bavarian Forest is the four-thousander tour over the Hohenbogen peaks Ahornriegel (1050 m), Schwarzriegel (1079 m), Eckstein (1073 m) and Bärenriegel (1017 m). The starting point of the approximately four-hour hike is the valley station of the Hohenbogen cable car. Only a few hundred meters from the Schönblick mountain hut, you reach the first thousand-meter peak, the Ahornriegel. It is only a short walk to the NATO towers on the Schwarzriegel, which are known as the border guards of the Cold War. In 2004, the facility was decommissioned. Past the Eckstein, the hiking trail leads to the Bärenriegel and then it goes back on the East Bavarian Way of St. James to the valley station of the Hohenbogenbahn. Tip: An alternative starting point is the circular hiking trail “Weg der Sinne” (“Path of the Senses”) with a start in the multi-generation park at the entrance to Rimbach.

The ULRICHSHOF and the Hohenbogen, which is only 10 km away, are perfect for a family winter vacation. You can expect 6 km of perfectly groomed ski slopes, 2 ski schools and restaurants at the mountain and valley station and directly at the ski slope. Cross-country skiers will also find an easily accessible starting point for challenging ridge trails at the excursion inn.

Boundless forest wilderness in Germany’s first national park: “Let nature be nature” is the philosophy. And indeed, nowhere between the Atlantic and the Urals are the forests with their moors, mountain streams and lakes allowed to develop over such a large area according to their very own laws into a unique wild forest landscape. The best way to explore this unique area is from the information center “Haus zur Wildnis” in Ludwigsthal. There, the meaning and background of the Bavarian Forest National Park is explained in an impressive way. Especially for children, the information is educational and exciting at the same time.

The Whitsun Ride in Bad Kötzting is one of the largest mounted processions of supplication in Europe and dates back to a vow made in 1412. Under the solemn ringing of the church bells, citizens and farmers leave the city on festively decorated horses, praying and renewing the ancient vow. The procession on horseback is led by the cross bearer. He is followed by the lantern bearer, the fanfare player, the ecclesiastical officiator with the sacristan and the altar boys. Behind them rides the Pentecost bridegroom with the two bridal guides. Every year on Whit Monday, about 800 horsemen on decorated horses and in old traditional costumes ride out through the Zellertal to Steinbühl.
